Help for Children in the Philippines
terre des hommes boosts for education and against violence in the Philippines, the regional focus lies on the island Mindanao in the South. The local partner organisations offer lessons and professional training for youths in order to qualify them for their future, but also in order to prevent young people from joining armed groups. For this reason, peace education and help in arbitrating disputes are central elements in the projects; the partners currently engage about 450 youths as active promoters for this work. A special focus of the project work is on the abolition of corporal punishment as educational method. The partner organisations create campaigns for a non-violent education addressed to educational institutions as well as families.
Additionally, the children and youths of the Manobo tribe in the Asusan del Sur province, in the Northeast of Mindanao, get a special intercultural education. They learn to cope with the challenges of daily life and to compete against discrimination without denying their culture. Letters and numbers are a natural part of their daily life, as well as the knowledge about the tradition that saved the survival of generations of their people.
